Most of what my Sister Cat & fellow Knight posted has strong merit, but I would have to disagree with one aspect…
“Window Dressing” … the need for nice drapes to complete a room.
I’m talking Oaths and Vigils here, not so much about chains…
When I sat down to write my oath, it made me think deeply about what Knighthood meant to me personally. I think it helped me communicate better and thus contribute something to the process the CoK is working on. It made me feel like I belonged to something… something bigger than just me & a few friends. It made me look at the ones who aren’t my friends as well. To look at the differences between them and myself.
I think Every Knight should Have to write an “Oath of Knighthood”.
I didn’t have a “Vigil”… I think I missed out on something special because of it.
IMO… A Vigil makes the person who is about to ascend to knighthood “Think Deeply” about the transition. It gives them a chance to take in just a bit of everyone who stops by to share a few thoughts, words and insights.
These two things become a very personal part of the Knight’s History…
They help form a foundation of tradition that is carried on in future generations.
They enrich the experience and help bring it closer to “Real”…
I don’t think that a “Code of Knighthood”, written by someone else, can do the same.
I think we’ve lost this “Window Dressing” and with it some of that “Real” quality that makes the White Belt something special.
Part of what we do here and now, should be to bring these “Rituals” and “Rights of Passage” back into Knighthood…
Now, I fully admit that it’s not going to work out perfect for every knighting…
My own Squire’s moment of ascension wasn’t quite what either of us expected.
However…
I am an Anti-paladin.
And killing my apprentice felt like the proper thing to do.
just sayin’
