"No. why?"
"No reason in particular really."

The bartender eyed the pretty face with lustful fascination.

"So you don't know where the next royal festivities will be held?" asked the girl with pale lips.

If her features were this pretty, imagine the rest of her....

"Well?" asked the unamused patron, intentionally interrupting the man's base train of thought.

"Oh...well, not exactly confirmed, but I hears the king will be making a trip to the north, to the Eagleshire Barony or somesuch."

"Ah, well that's grand!" she playfully exclaimed.

"You wouldn't by any chance need...a friend to travel with ye? I hear the roads up to the north are fraught with ill meaning highway men and all, would hate to see a pretty thing like you go missing, ya know?"

The girl poised in an innocent recoil of feigned concern and gratitude. "Oh, I may need a guide...you wouldn't happen to know any strapping trailmaker....now would you?"

An involuntary smirk formed on the barkeeps lips.

Oh what fortunate day.

--------------------------------

It had been a month and a half now since the burden of the crown became his. He had not moved into the kingdom keep found nestled in the Tanglewoods of Emerald Hills proper, as it was expected, of all ascending royalty.

It was against his nature to make a place, anything more than a permanent home.

The grinding pebbles under his weight kept him awake. He had parted ways the kingdoms prince regent, Nexus. The glint of madness shone brightly in that man's eyes. Sutra smirked knowing full well, that madness was Nexus' new method.

Preferring a walk to the jolt of non-magicked teleporting, his travel plans had to be planned appropriately. Sometimes, the occasional planar jump was required. He didn't miss leaping from point A to point B much.

It was two weeks now since his messengers carried notes of thankful encouragement to the tribe elders and leaders to each clan and company throughout the realms.

A few kind replies and vows of allegiance to the court of heart's were made. Yet, other's he expected to gladly take his side in battle had remained eeriely silent. Matters indeed, requiring his personal attention.

Sutra prepared his travels to Eagleshire, spanning a two week period with an advanced trip to the outskirts of Finder's Keep.

Months ago, the personally penned missive found it's way to the crown of their daughter kingdom, the Golden Plains. The monarch gladly accepted the offer of renewed peace agreements.

The preparation that went into the joint feast was no small feat, but it was all but accomplished. All that remained was the arrival of the date and festivities. On the 11th date of Febres.

He could feel her walking on their shared realm now. Not many were informed of her arrival. The night after the regent's caravan left for their native northlands; did she come back.

Pausing for a moment, Sutra stood still and listened. Could he hear her name whispered on the wind yet? Would he peer into the natural heartbeat that sang to all of creation.

Natural noise masked any hint of her wakened state.

He would make his trip through Eagleshire to speak with the baronial crown.

A tainted past indeed, but these were dark times, requiring drastic measures. Even forging an awkward alliance.

With renewed haste, Sutra ventured north. Cautious of things to come.

The dancing and merriment, laughing and chattering of friends rang in
his tired mind.

Echoing shouts and toasts played over and over as he studied the
darkness of his inner eye lids.

Sleep had come far and in between.

Happy images floated like distant clouds. The villagers all looked at
peace. Serene, the scene was.

The running, it was the running that made him anxious. He had to find
them. To make sure they were okay.

He found a crowd hovering over a victim. He inched closer to make sure
the motionless body was not that of a familiar.

The body lay splayed open. Innards spilled from the corpse, ripped
asunder by an unseen hunger.

He didn't register the moaning, a grinding chorus of macabre
cacophony. He realized the amassed crowd had taken their fill from the
cold lifeless body. They wanted fresh kill.

Their grayish blue skin betrayed any semblance of living flesh. They
had been recent converts. They had only fallen to the undeath for no
more than a couple hours.

He realized his homelands were not safe. He thought his lands would be
untouched by talk of peace and a desire of equal rights to be free.

All lies, lies spoken from unfeeling lips.

They shuffled with a new purpose, friends and family; seeking living
breathing sustanace.

His frenzied home became a horrific maze. It felt like an eternity,
houses burned and the living wailed in new found torment.

Rushing into the last house, he found a small group of shivering
survivors.

'Find safety in the hills, go, and wait for the others!' Sutra ordered.

Fear stricken eyes glazed over with hopelessness stared back at him.

'NOW!'

------------------------------

He had to warn them before the contagion penetrated into their borders.

Rushing through the back alleys he reached an opening to the main square.

The pyre burned hungry. The dead had all gathered here. She stood
triumphantly upon a heap of the soon to be converted.

Dressed in stark white, her blazing eyes shone wickedly brilliant. Her
hem stained in dark sanguine, dry and fresh blood staining her
sarcrireligious dress.

His eyes widened in awed realization as he reverantly mouthed the words:

'...the white queen...?'

--------------------------------

He woke up with a cold shiver, the road had turned into a long journey
back south. The banquet had been a few days past, his unassuming
carriage carried him closer to Eagleshire.

Wrapping his coat tighter around his chest, Sutra sat back and inhaled
the scented night's air. The village they were driving through was a
welcoming scene. Fireplace's burned busily, the smell of scorched wood
wafted pleasingly in the wintery sky.

He wanted to speak about his dream to the ever vigilant driver, yet he
remained quiet. He would speak of his visions soon enough.

That, or his visions would soon find him.
