At my job, I work with teenagers who are in danger of dropping out of school. Many have backgrounds that are hard for me to even imagine. Many more are using and addicted to various drugs. So I have a soft spot for places that seek to help people overcome addictions.

I read this Article a couple years ago, but hadn't done anything with it. But I decided today that I would try to get people together to see if we could help.

The 24 Hour Club in Dallas is taking donations of both non-perishable food items and other essentials (look on the website for details). I was hoping we could do a donation drive and perhaps challenge the other parks to see which group could gather the most donations.

If you are interested, PM me here or e-mail me at harmond@cfbisd.edu.

I love it! Eagleshire has been talking about adopting a charitable organization for some time now. I have many thoughts in my head how something like this can work. One of my ideas was adopting a different organization with every Reign. The 24 Hour Club would be a great one to start with! I will go on their website and print out a list of requested items and start working with ES officers and populous to get this going.

I just visited the site and found the wish list to be less that what I had imagined.
Carmony, will you contact the person on the site and see if there is more they need?
My thoughts were gently used clothing as a possible donation item. I would imagine that some would go to transitional housing leaving a volitile situation and leaving everything behind or excessive drug abuse would leave some with much less than what we have. I know I have a FULL closet to clean out and a recovery house is a great option for a new home for those items.

The ydo ask for gently used clothing so the people living there can have nicer clothes for job interviews / going to work. There are 2-3 different places on the site that list items they need. I will bring all the information I can on Sunday.

It'd be nice to have a huge box out at the park every week that people can make donations to.

Does anyone want to volunteer to hold on to the donations until they get dropped off?

so how about we start by doing this through the rest of the summer for this organization, then every three months or so, Eagleshire will adopt a new organization. Around October we could look for a place to donate to for Christmas (toys for kids, food for family in need, adopt a nursing home, etc).

I'd be willing to maintain the donation box.

Thats way cool! My company does food drives just before Thanksgiving for MetroCrest in Farmers Branch. Maybe we can find a similar organization in Denton that has need during that time. We also do a Coat Drive every year just before X-mas to help out families in need.
There are also nursing homes that house Veterans and other elderly that have no one during the holiday season. We could look into gifts for them?
Just some more ideas...

Where are we with this? Were you able to make an announcement at the park Sunday? Any interest?
