I have just bought some heavy leather and am trying to figure out what I am going to do with it. I am going through the learning process of hardening the leather and I am also thinking about adding rings.

The question I have now is this: Metal rings give a +1, so If I use 12 gauge rings will I be able to add a +2 or not? The rules are kind of vague about the adding and subtracting of points for the add-ons.

Thanks again.

The rings will give +1. The +1 for heavy guage materials is for the base material. So if the leather was at least 1/4" thick it could get that bonus. You can still get a bonus for superior construction, etc. But that is subjective and will vary from reeve to reeve.

this is almost on topic....or at least similar:

Yes, even 16 gauge alum will hold up but may need to be repaired more frequently. I am working on a 16 gauge steel piece right now. Do people still give a -1 on aluminum as it was in the past?

How much are you paying for aluminum? Steel is under $18 for 14gauge 1/3mile @ Farm & Tractor stores

The minimum for chain mail is 16 gauge, so 14 gauge would get a +1 for heavier gauge, but the aluminum would be a -1 for materials. So it would still be 3pts for a 4 on 1 standard pattern.

This is , of course, subject to the reeve seeing the product and determining if the heavier gauge aluminum is still sturdy enough to be as effective as 16 gauge steel.
