Is it possible to have a metal boss in the middle of a shield?? A round bowl that covers the handle, like on a viking shield? I know we can wear metal armor, but the rules are not specific about the shield. Any comments?

No ...and it's all about safety. The rules look pretty clear to me on shield construction....padded like the weapons we use. You could always find a piece of metallic looking fabric, cut it in a circle, pad under it and sew it to your shield cover for the 'look' you are trying to achieve.

that won't work. The boss covers a hole in the center of the shield which in turn holds the handle. Viking style punch shield. Like this

so, not going for looks, going for actual mounts used in the period. Perhaps the boss could be covered with foam, or maybe a plastic bowl covered with foam.

Combine yours and Tigerharke's idea for a nice looking boss. Using materials that are allowed (Plastic, foam, fabric) you should be able to secure it with some mighty duct tape. Or if you want it to be more sturdily attached add holes around the rim of the bowl and inner edge of the hole and lace them together then add duct tape/foam/fabric.
