The dark shade (Sutra) sat in the dark void he had sequestered for the past fort night (actually just a not so well lit corner of a shady and lack luster inn whose name is inconsequential in the arch of things though it could easily be considered the Sable Pride corner at the Three Jugs Tavern) and finished the last letter. His fingers felt as if they had been put to the mill. (His fingers are fine actually, just a bit sore from writing all the letters he is preparing to send off to the kingdom inhabitants. A little bit of aloe rub down should do the trick though. Thanks for asking.) The shadows seemed to pulsate across the void he rested in. (A reference to Sutra again, sitting at the table where he just finished writing all the letters he's about to send off. Yeah.)

The thirteen messengers (generic NPC's although anyone member from each park can easily place themselves into the sport and join the RP.) all stood to attention as the dark one (Sutra - yeah, him again.) spoke.

"Each of you have been entrusted to carry this burden with urgency. The kingdom must know of the travesties being committed. I myself am not aware of all of the details and can only hope it reveals itself to us soon."

Sutra stood up as he pressed the last seal on the folded parchment. Pointing to the adjacent table, brown leather satchels fat with the same missive leaned against each other awaiting their respective owner.

"The satchels are all clearly marked as to who owns it and where it's final destination is. I have called upon you all to seed this message across the land. Each member has been addressed. I may have missed a handful of names, but this is the best I could do in such short notice."

He (Sutra) leaned forward and re-iterated.

"Make sure each and every name on your list receives their respective parcel. Have them check it for any dark majicks or traces of poison. They will find none. But they MUST read the contents. They have to know. All of them."

The messengers (again, can be generic or specific persona's - your call!) all nodded and began to shuffle towards the table as they dutifully found and took their respective satchel. One by one, they left the inn and began their arduous travels back to their home lands.

Soon the message would be dispersed across the kingdom at large. Few would be left in the dark.

Sutra rested his weight on the wooden bench, creaking under the newly gained weight he had unhappily put on. These past couple years have not been terribly kind to him. No matter. He would endure none the less. Slowly he unfolded the message he had memorized recently. A message that burned him to the core.

He (Sutra) sat reading the missive again. And once more for good measure.

He (Yup- Sutra) rested his head back against the cool wall and drifted off into temporary bliss.

-------------------The Letter--------------------

Hi there. Sutra here just wanting to say hi. Yeah, so anyways - I appreciate your time and will make this quick'ish. So, we need your input as to how to make RP in this kingdom interesting. See, it gets boring when just one or two lonesome voices post something on the boards. Even worse when it's just our own flavor/addition to what's happening in our persona's lives. Is it meant to exclude anyone out there.

Not really.

Does it make it hard for anyone to jump in and join the fun. I guess? You are what drives the RP coming to life. Monarchs, Regents, RP Guilds, GM of Monsters and beyond can dream up the most inane or far fetched RP imaginable, but if it doesn't have the full involvement of the populace (yes - besides it being coherent and well organized - don't get me wrong!) then it'll just be another RP'ish reign/theme under our belts, to be filed away as "Shesh, that was a bland reign RP wise." Is the populace the only ones to blame.

HELL NO!

Those is charge who don't deliver, they carry as much or more of the burden then the peons. Especially when in and out going monarchy just tosses the baton and bails or comes in with some brand new theme that doesn't allow for a smooth transition. Some say RP and the day of the Flurb has come and gone. Maybe. Boffer fighting is so much easier to come out and do. You don't have to dress to the nines (and I wouldn't want to fight in court garb either) and it's quick and easy (aside from building weapons.) Some invest time and refine their skills at the martial arts. And that's fine. Invited actually.

Why not!?

Lame fighting is just that, lame. And I like to think that we have pretty fine warriors (I mean fighters, not the class specifically) in our kingdom borders! So where are the 'Flurbs' and their battle games and flowing RP themes? At events? On the forum boards? We've got a couple out there who are dedicated to the death and they try. Try at the park level. They try at the kingdom level. Some have mild/above average success and they have heart breaking failure. Other's managed to pull off some pretty spectacular feats of RP events/reigns. But they really do try to bring some RP life to their parks and sometimes it works and sometimes it fails. Miserably.

Sometimes it's because you've got a really small turn out and everyone just wants to ditch. Maybe it's because the park champion comes up with some wild ideas and the plot or rules are too complicated to enjoy. Could be that the parks lacks educated and dedicated reeves who can confidently resolve disputes over gray areas of the game and the park populace feels it's easier to simply ditch. Could be that the park is not really RP-centric and is a fighter laden stomping ground. Could be a million reasons why RP doesn't easily work.

Some want full fledged RP battles, complete with mazes and minotaurs and prizes and garb and riddles begging to be solved. Others are just content with ring the bell or capture the flag type games with some tie in to the reign’s theme and call it good.

Can't rain all the time.

So do your part at the local level. Get the people educated on getting simple garb going. Get people to explore their persona backgrounds as silly as they may be. Get members interested in the A+S aspect of Amtgard. Hold bardic as the park winds down. Pit fires and hot chocolate are perfect for the coming winter months. Park leaders who step up to be just that gotta be willing to work their arses off (and I am so not saying anyone in power now or ever isn't or hasn't!) to see a change. We can't expect to see the fine art of RP flourish over night. It took years for it to dwindle away and it will probably take years for the kingdom's RP golden age to shine again.

Will you be able to influence every member who shows up on a weekend to imbibe in your RP reindeer games? Probably not. Some show up to simply fight. They don't have a persona. They don't have garb. They don't have a background and don't want to. Do they deserve any less a right to come out a play? Nope. Just gotta face the firing squad on this one, not everyone wants what you want. And that's what we stress about the game. That there's something for EVERYONE. Not just jocks, not just flurbs. Everyone. That's Amtgard.

Quick example. I remember seeing a poll on E-Sam in the sense of what belt would you like to attain. And to my surprise, it was the Crown belt that took the lead in the end. Weird huh? But at the local level, you ask the new kid what belt they'd aspire for and I'm pretty sure their answer would be Sword. Why? Cause it's the most visible art of Amtgard nowadays. It can easily be seen as the most prestigious and glorious of the four honors, though don't get me wrong - they should all be equally glorious and respected in their own right. Say you were driving by a park and saw a handful of garbed up folk sitting around. Would that cause you to stop and check it out? Or would you slow down driving by a field full of rampaging people (preferably in decent RP garb) flinging spell balls, firing off arrows, and rushing a shield a wall?

In my case, it was the allure of the mixed combat/fantasy that sealed my fate.

Anywho!

Some feel that a monarchs term of six months is too short to make any real difference and feel a year would be to long a occupy a volunteer/elected position. Rock and a hard place.

I've seen a reign flow into each other well and others have take a hairpin U-turn in regards to theme. The platforms all tend to mirror each other. The approach varies, but the theme is what get's flurbs involved or disinterested and typically furthers a 'stickjocks' feeling about RP and Flurbs in general.

I used to defend the Flurb cause whole heartedly but have slowly learned that it really is an ambiguous term that I personally define as "a disheveled state of mind with illusions of fantasy that are innocently ambitious but can easily go awry." It's a state of mind that usually results in turning off 'non-flurbs' due feelings of resentment/confusion a vast majority of 'flurbs' have due to how easily big Spring/Banner or similar type wars go off without a hitch but simple RP battle games fall apart half way through with everyone wandering back to base only to ditch the rest of the day away.

I proudly claim to be a Flurb (but it's a title I no longer use to separate myself from others - but more of a declaration of what my contribution to amtgard as a whole is), though on occasion I've been labeled a 'flurb-jock' besides some other less tasteful titles, but eh that's for another tiring missive. I admit I haven't come out in garb in a while. I'll be working on that. Got to, especially with a new aspiring park in the works. Gotta be part of the solution and set a proper example. Will I be the ideal role model for new'uns. Hope not. But I hope I don't turn them off from the game and cause a loss of a potential full fledged member of Amtgard.

All in all. Have fun, whatever your contribution to our beloved hobby/lifestyle/what have you is. Just remember, we're all in this together, for better or worse and it's up to us to make or break what we have left of Amtgard.

So yeah. That's all I got to say about that.

Sincerely,
Sutra Bahuas
