Goblins, Dragons, were-beasts, and more poured forth from the portal that had opened in the heart of Tanglewood Forest. The people of The Hills fought bravely, and soon, the cryptic tome was recovered so that it's magic could seal the portal forever. But the tome had another purpose as well. To lock the portal open, to prevent those on the other side from hiding away and dealing off their secrets.

Finn had been ravenous in his appetite for knowledge about the portal, and the being behind it. But even with the Emerald Library at his disposal, he could only uncover legends and hints of waht was beyond the portal. This is what had made the decision. This is why it must be done.

As the sage handed Forest the book he yelled over the crowd, "The Kingdom will soon be yours. You must choose. With this passage you may seal off the portal forever." The sage pointed at a page in the book. "And with this passage, you will lock the portal open. Choose wisely."

Forest knew what he had to do. The Kingdom must be safe. It's people must no longer live in fear. He called the charge and led the army towards the black void that was the portal of darkness. Some of those who had been slain in battle had been raised up again by these dark forces and now stood ready to defend the demon behind the void.

As the battle began, the demon stepped forth, his minions in a bloodthirsty rage. Slowly the army of The Hills made it's way to the portal, and the 4 casters began to recite the passage. Howling, the dark army pushed back, desperate to stop the ritual from being complete, but they were to late. Forest chanted the last words and a crackling energy lept forth into the portal...and it stood open.

Forest looked to the people around him. 'No longer shall we fear the coming of these evils! No more shall we wonder when they shall return. The portal remains open and WE now will bring fear unto them. We will cross over, learn their secrets, and show them what THEY have to fear from the might of the Emerald Hills!!" With that, the army finished off the demon and his followers. But many were uneasy. What did the future hold with the portal being open in the lands. Only time would tell...

“That portal should not remain open, your grace. We have no idea what may lie on the other side of that...” Fionnigan Hellblazer searched for the right words on which to float his thoughts. “that insult to sanity.”

“Well we're going to find out very shortly after we pass through it.” Sir Everlast said.

“By the gods, that's actually glee in his voice. He can't wait to do this. He's as giddy as a kid playing hoops in his lord's courtyard.” Fionnigan thought.

“Hellblazer, you have been a loyal and argent servant of the realm for years now. As a rider of the gryphon you and your compatriots were instrumental to many victories. You are a pillar of the wizards guild, and a veteran of many wars and battles. It is with all do respect that I tell you that yes we are going to leave this portal open, and yes we are going to march our armies directly into it, and that we are going to take the fight to them.” King Forest stated.

“Have you ever heard of the Tome of the Mad Arab, your grace?” Fionnigan asked.

“Yes I am familiar with it. It's an old maids tale. Something wet nurses tell babes to get them to behave. If you're not good Amir Al Din will get you. Yes I know the stories sorcerer, what of them?” king Forest replied.

“They are not just stories, your grace. I have tracked and investigated dark tomes and collections of primal evil for years now, in the hope that for everyone that I came in possession of more people were saved from madness, terror, and death. I have seen many copies of the tome of Al Din, and a few bound in the skins of man inked in human blood. Now it wasn't some orc shaman who did this, nor was it the work of some lich. No the hands that made these translations of Al Din's infernal words were all too human, driven mad with dreams of blood, chaos, and utter despair.”

“Hellblazer, if this is...” Forest interjected.

“I am not done, your grace. The spells, rituals, and methods of torture and debasement described in the works I have found are beyond description. They say that the entire tome is one continues prayer of murder and madness. They say that the original volume was found by Amir Al Din in the desert of the first kingdom in a lost and ancient city beneath the dunes. They say it was written in the black speech of the void, and that with it's translation evil was brought into the world. Now this portal is an open gateway to the very void itself. What I have seen written in the Tome of Al Din is nothing compared to what is on the other side of that portal. Riding headlong into it would not be what I would advise, and I think you are all fools if you are going to do so. Furthermore I will not be a party to this folly of strategy, your grace.” Fionnigan said.

“So be it Hellblazer. No matter what, we are going to breach this portal, and we are going to bring hell to what ever is on the other side.” replied King Forest.

“No, your grace, I am afraid you are the one who is going to get hell. You're marching right into it.” Fionnigan said as he turned to leave the royal tent.

The shade lurched forward and found himself temporarily alone. Trembling hands produced a stained piece of parchment. Bloodshot eyes scanned the list again. Sutra haphazardly rolled the message and placed it between his teeth before reaching in his leather pouch for a brass compass.

Shielding his eyes from the intrusive sunlight, he was able to make out the small caravan on the shimmering horizon. Late. But better late than never he thought to himself. The kingdom had received his urgent warning complete with instructions and co-ordinates.

Alby had managed to unite the kingdom under his banner with the help of Sir Forest. Sutra could make out a couple shapes here and there. Sir Everlast was never hard to mistake. A second and third caravan began to converge. Sir Clu's banner fluttered high in the air coupled with the markings of Sir Kenta's Redhawk clan.

The pristine wolf paw banners could be seen a bit to the left of things. The Luna Lobos had also found their way here.

To where the portal had been birthed.

The slight cover the forest provided did little to abate the sin's dripping sweat. His waterskin had been depleted for a couple hours. His mind overflowed with anxious scenarios.

His ability to avoid capture by the creatures who had united to protect the arrival of their master was a miracle, taking every fiber of his being to manipulate his prowess as a master assassin. It had been a long time since he had call upon the arts of obfuscation.

Soon the might of the kingdom would clash against the power of the void.

***************

"You must choose here and now Sir Forest. Either you close the portal, or you let it remain open..." hissed the fatigued archivist.

The knight stood defiant as the battle raged all around them. The hissing of firebolts against Frost Giant flesh was deafening. The wicked but unseen presence of the undead could be felt. Tendrils of lust coiled around them as Incubi wove their songs. Cries escaped the lips of those infected by the curse of the were-contagion. Death was all consuming this day.

The incoming monarch looked to his advisers as Sutra held out the pieces of tome the kingdom forces had managed to recover.

"What say ye?" he posed.

The response was indecisive. Fear and panic mingled with blood lust and over-confidence. As if by an act of the gods, their response was unitedly overwhelming.

"Manifest Destiny!" they declared.

Sir Forest reached out and took the pieces of red stained tome. He would keep the portal open.

Sutra's eyes widened in confused surprise. King Alby's knight had chosen to keep the very source of his squire's trials and tribulations open.

The sage wizard then called upon the aid of one caster of each school and stated the facts they needed to know in order to defeat the dark harbinger and his minions.

"Each caster must recite their part in order, five full cycles worth. Anything more or less will be the end of us all. Do you understand!?" the sin cried out.

Their undoubting eyes were answer enough.

Sutra stood back as the army marched forth into the darkest regions of the forest. The cries of men and women overwhelmed by the mark of traitorous possession echoed through the dying canopies. Driven mad by the grasp of darkness, at least a quarter of the kingdoms forces mindlessly defected.

A dark day indeed.

The shade clamored up to the peak of the highest hill to get a better vantage point of the slaughter. The kingdom had managed to unite enough shards to summon the Emerald Titan, but to their dismay realized the titan delivered death to both sides equally.

The archivist had profusely warned Sir Forest of the titan's possible neutrality and that they would be required to plead their case to garner favor from the guardian.

The slaughter was absolute. Glorious in every measure. Sutra watched on as flesh and bone were rendered lifeless.

The incantation was complete. The portal lay open. A living blasphemy pulsating, defying the laws of order.

Satisfied with what had come to pass, the shade nodded before turning away from the carnage. 'The king can sort out the living and dying.' Sutra thought. His part here was done.

Wiping away a trickle of black icor from his right ear, the shade whispered into the wind and was gone.
