Part 4

With the dark knight missing, the manner house had taken on an entirely different appearance. The tomb-like silence had been replaced with the constant sounds of young voices. The walls and floors had been cleared of layers upon layers of dust and cat fur. The windows had been opened and the air allowed to circulate. The change was near miraculous…

Upon receiving the news of his knight’s capture, Lord Sutra knew he had to make sure the small pride of black cats would be well cared for, so he contacted his own household in hopes that someone could take on this duty. Taking up residence within the old manner house where the dark knight had lived alone for so many years would be no easy task, but he felt certain that the Talrens would be up for the challenge.

After hearing all the details, Lord & Lady Talren agreed to move themselves and their three young daughters into the old house and set aside an area for Delphos should he return. With the terms established, the family began the difficult job of cleaning away centuries of solitude…

After several loads of debris had been carted from the grounds, the floors cleaned and some of the walls painted, the ancient manner house began to take on a new life. Only a small apartment remained cloaked in darkness and shadow. The dark knight’s lair was arranged with great detail, for his lack of tolerance for change was well known by Lord Sutra and he emphasized this point strongly to the Talrens.

It was in this sanctuary that Delphos suddenly found himself, alive and well. Albeit sore beyond words and more tired than he had ever felt in his life.

What had happened?
How did he get here?

Last he remembered he had traveled through the pool’s reflection and into the mirror on his own altar. He had spoken to someone close to him and had given instructions to find the Mage known as Finn…

What had happened after that?
He tried to remember, but thinking about it only caused his head to ache even more.
He needed sleep. Perhaps the answers would come to him in his dreams.
He laid back in his own bed. Looking around the room he saw many things that were familiar, yet nothing was exactly the same as it had been before. Pictures had been moved, objects displaced and everything seemed cleaner.

As he fell into a much needed sleep he heard the sound of children laughing…

The fire crackled, illuminating a small amount of his surroundings. Stars shifted almost unperceivable in the night sky. The moon grinned down on the face of mother tonight.

The weary traveler yawned as he rubbed the side of his scruffy face. Tears formed in his squinting eyes. How long had he gone without sleep? Sutra had lost track of many things. The one thing he was certain of was the trail that leads him back to King's Point.

He was a day's walk away from the Barony.

Sutra could have used magic or ridden a stead to make better time, but he realized that this trek would take time. Sorting out facts and rumor was much better handled on a schedule.

A column of smoke lifted up into the cool breeze. The relentless heat of day had begun to give way to the much more tolerable cool night air.

He had prepared for this ritual many times over, never losing sight of its urgency.

The exposed flesh glistened in the firelight. It was still cool to the touch. Producing his most favored blade, Sutra smiled as he made the first cut. The wet sound was fulfilling.

He prepared the white orbs, lining the three spheres in a row. One by one, he cracked through their delicate paper thin shell and poured them upon the heated surface. He examined them for any tell tale signs. Blood in the yolk was an ill omen.

He prepared the yellow powder and mixed it with milk until it formed a plain looking paste. His hands pressed into the cold mixture, flattening them into thin discs. Fleeting memories of watching the old woman making these exact motions flittered between his thoughts.

Midreign was no more than a few days away. Much injustice had been seen in the kingdom already. Even The Guild has a standard code of conduct. What had been allowed to happen at the barony at the hands of the Saracens was inexcusable.

Sutra recalled parts of the most recent missive that had found him. The royal seal was genuine. He questioned its sincerity, but above all; he would wait and see if Sir Forest’s word of establishing law and order in the kingdom would come to pass.

His breathing grew shallow as he placed the freshly carved ham and corn discs on the griddle, nestling the objects next to the frying eggs.

Sutra would start his day with a decent breakfast. It was one of the few things he looked forward to anymore.

Perhaps today would provide him with actual answers.
