Any tips on getting a really even color? How can you reduce flaking of the dye?

How do people get that really supple final texture to a leather belt? I've seen a few, and my old squire's belt was made in that way, but I don't actually know what the secret ingredient is.

tandy makes a spray on dye system that make for a very even and nice color. Its a little aerosol can that plugs onto a jar with the dye in it...almost like air brushing the dye on. Great little system and very inexpensive. Think mine was like 8 bucks. As far as flacking goes, a good dye shouldn't flake but any leather of age will flake so its probably the leather flaking, not the dye itself.

Getting the leather wet and using multiple coats of diluted dye also works. I'm too cheap to buy a sprayer.
