What can you recommend to prepare a page from a sketchbook as an entry for a cultural tourney?

Does it need to have a background and be a complete scene, or is a fun character study entry-worthy?

Cut the original page from the sketchbook or make a photocopy? Mat it? Frame it?

I don't know what to do or where to begin, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely mat it at the very least. No photocopies...

If the piece is done in charcoal or pastels I would use a spray fixative at the very least, framed and glassed would be even better. This is to protect your piece from smudges and it does make the drawing look much more presentable. The more complete the piece looks the better. You could possibly get away with leaving the drawing in the book for a lesser tournament but not for Dragonmaster. The subject of the piece is of minimal concern, complete scene or character study are both worthy of entry. What IS of concern is how well the piece is done and how well it is finished. Consider whether or not you would want to see the piece displayed on a gallery wall. Visit galleries and study how the pieces are presented. This is a good starting place.
